Overview

The Division of General Internal Medicine serves as the academic home to general internists on the faculty of NYU School of Medicine under the leadership of Sondra Zabar, MD.

The Division's core mission is to optimize the health outcomes of individuals and populations served by urban healthcare delivery systems through excellence in physician education, outstanding clinical care, and innovative research. The Division is home to several domains of clinical, training and research: 

• Primary Care
  • Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Training Program
• Geriatrics
• The Program for Medical Education Innovations and Research (PrMEIR)
• Medical Genetics
• Center for Health and Human Rights
  • Program for the Survivors of Torture

Division faculty primarily provide care at several clinical facilities:

• Bellevue Hospital Center
• Tisch Hospital
• VA Medical Center New York
• Gouverneur Healthcare Services

General internists in private practice  in and around NYU Langone Medical Center (including our Faculty Group Practice, NYU Internal Medicine Associates) are also members of the Division faculty.

The Division of General Internal Medicine offers a range of training at the post-graduate level, including Fellowships in:

• Hospice and Palliative Medicine
• Primary Care Research
• Geriatrics

Division of General Internal Medicine faculty are engaged in a wide-ranging program of extramurally funded research in core issues affecting the health of urban populations, including substance abuse, behavior change, chronic disease prevention and management, and evidence-based strategies for training future physicians to address these issues effectively themselves.
