Scott Braithwaite, MD, associate professor in the Department of Medicine and chief on the section of value and comparative effectiveness, has been elected to serve as president of the Society for Medical Decision Making (SMDM), the leading society devoted to improving the science behind health decisions, effective October 25. An accomplished investigator in decision science, quality, and cost effectiveness, as section chief he is advancing a program of rigorous, policy-relevant research that incorporates methods of decision science, comparative effectiveness, and cost effectiveness towards the goal of optimizing quality and value in healthcare.

Dr. Braithwaite is eager to embrace the challenges of his new role, saying, "I am awed and humbled by my election, and look forward to working with society members in this critical time of health reform."

The SMDM’s mission is to improve health outcomes through the advancement of proactive systematic approaches to clinical decision-making and policy-formation in health care by providing a scholarly forum that connects and educates researchers, providers, policy makers, and the public. It has an international membership of over 1,000 experts in mathematical modeling, economics, and decision psychology; and includes leading scientific authorities influencing health system improvement in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
