Veterans Affairs Hospital places major emphasis on direct patient care and graduate/undergraduate medical education, with its attending physicians serving as clinician-educators.
Its primary care program consists of 4 interdisciplinary practice teams (2 general medicine, 1 geriatric and 1 mental-health). Preventive health and chronic disease management receive particular emphasis.
Faculty members serve as preceptors/mentors during ambulatory block rotations and for the continuity clinics of general medicine residents and fellows.
Collaborations between Bellevue Hospital and the VA resulted in the development of an ambulatory care curriculum and formal didactics (morning report, intern core conferences, ambulatory care lectures) for both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
