John Balmes, MD
Professor of Medicine
Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine
University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine
Dr. Balmes discussed the role of inhaled environmental pollutants in the pathogenesis of disease in the developing world, specifically in his work in Guatamala. He focused primarily on improvements in pulmonary functions following interventions to decrease the amount of inhaled particulate matter and pollutants - specifically, with change to construction of stoves to decrease inhaled matter with indoor cooking.
