Why Is a Capsule Endoscopy Done?

Your doctor may recommend a capsule endoscopy to help evaluate signs and symptoms, or diagnose a condition, that is suspected of being related to the small intestine. Signs, symptoms, or tests that may lead to a recommendation for a capsule endoscopy may include:

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding for which no cause or source can be identified
  • Iron-deficiency anemia, when the suspected potential cause is bleeding from the small intestine
  • Chronic abdominal pain that is suspected of originating from the small intestine
  • Signs or symptoms of Crohn’s disease
  • A polyp syndrome affecting the small intestine
  • An abnormal result on an imaging test of the small intestine
