Core Curriculum Conference

This conference takes place at the VA from 1:30pm - 2:30pm every Friday. At this conference, assigned topics are discussed by the GI fellows and attendings. The core components of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition are discussed over a 3-year cycle and include physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of GI disorders. Endoscopic topics are part of this core series and include a review of the indications, contraindications, and techniques of endoscopy and are taught by hands on demonstrations, endoscopic image reviews and a review of the endoscopic literature. In addition, there is a series of research project development conferences which emphasize fundamentals of study design and statistics, discussions on the progress of the ongoing fellows' research studies and potential new projects. Each fellow is required to perform an independent research project and these projects are discussed in detail during this conference.

Endoscopy Course

This conference is designed for first year fellows and takes place at Bellevue Hospital early in July. First year fellows are taught the basics of endoscopy lab safety and principles of infection control as well as the basics of sedation, obtaining informed consent and how to care for their equipment.

Endoscopy Rounds

Every morning at the VA and Bellevue from 8am - 8:30am (M, Th, F) and at 9am-9:30am (T, W) the fellows and GI faculty review all of the endoscopic procedures from the previous day and discuss the procedures to be performed that day. In addition, this conference provides the fellows with further teaching on the indications, contraindications, and findings of endoscopy.

GI Teaching Rounds

This conference is held on Wednesdays both at the VA (2:30pm - 4pm) and Bellevue (2:00pm - 3:30pm). During this time, fellows present consultations to the GI faculty and these cases are used to discuss the diagnosis and management of GI diseases.

GI Attending Rounds

The 1st year fellows select a clinical topic, the second years a more basic science topic and the 3rd year fellows present the results of their research projects at the end of the academic year. The remaining conferences are given by local and visiting faculty. On the second Tuesday of each month, the GI faculty and fellows attend the multidisciplinary tumor conference. This conference is also attended by surgery, radiology, oncology, and pathology and discusses the diagnosis and management of GI malignancies using a case-based format.

Horowitz Rounds
