The Phillip and Janice Levin Fellowship in Gastrointestinal Research

With the breathtaking advancement of scientific knowledge, there is a growing need for clinicians capable of serving as translational researchers. In order to provide select fellows with the skill set necessary to join the cadre of gastroenterologists able to perform cutting-edge research, the NYU Division of Gastroenterology Fellowship Program offers the Phillip and Janice Levin fellowship in Gastrointestinal Research. In distinction to many research training programs, the NYU research program allows for perfect integration of clinical and scientific education, such that upon completion of the program, our research fellows will be equally successful as both clinicians and scientists and will be optimally prepared to solve the most intriguing translational research questions.

After identification of the ideal research mentor and development of a mentoring committee to optimize the fellow’s development, the fellow will spend the majority of their first of their 4-5 year fellowship in a laboratory. During this time, the fellow will have access to the educational activities and resources of the clinical fellowship and, depending on the research question asked, will be provided an outpatient clinic and endoscopic experience that will support the research goals. During the ensuing 3 years, the fellow will continue to have an integrated research and clinical experience, based on the needs outlined by the fellow’s research mentor and mentoring committee. We anticipate that 18-24 months of years 2-4 will be spent fully integrated in clinical fellowship activities, with the remaining time devoted to further advancement of the research agenda with any necessary support from time in the clinic and performing endoscopy. Should further training be necessary after completion of four years of training, a fifth year of integrated research and clinical work is possible. All time spent in the laboratory will be supplemented by a didactic research curriculum provided by the NYU Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). Phillip and Janice Levin Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the NYU Masters of Science in Clinical investigation (MSCI) program, culminating in attainment of a Master’s degree.
