Laura Barisoni, MD

The objective of this proposal is the development of an infrastructure that empowers rapid and effective evaluation of disease mechanisms in patients with kidney disease.  The key element of this infrastructure is a comprehensive depository for biological samples from kidney patients linked with structured, detailed clinical information characterizing the disease and disease course in each patient.

The secondary element is the plan to learn more about how to identify human index molecules, proteins, metabolites, and genes that may be responsible for renal damage. In addition, we hope to learn what significance these molecules have in different disease states. Identifying and determining the concentration of these molecules in different diseases and at different levels of disease severity could lead to the development of new diagnostic methods, the prediction of disease progression and the use of specific treatments to slow or stop kidney damage.  In addition, new therapeutic targets will be identified for further evaluation.
