Research Day

Faculty member explains research to Bruce Cronstein, MD

Research Day 2012 set for May 8

The Department of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine embodies the “triple threat.”  Teaching, patient care and research are distinct missions carried out by the Department of Medicine and these missions all inform each other.  The research carried out in the Department is inspired by the problems encountered on the wards and the questions raised during teaching rounds are frequently the stimulus for an investigation carried to the bench or, increasingly, to the computer.

Arthur C. DeGraff, MD

Every year we celebrate the research carried out in the Department of Medicine and honor the memory of Dr. Arthur DeGraff who developed thiomerin for use as one of the first diuretics. The research is submitted, reviewed competitively and presented by the students, house officers, fellows and junior faculty who carried out the work.  Every year we receive well over 120 abstract submissions, of which less than 10% are presented orally and the remainder presented as posters.  The abstracts judged to be the best are awarded honors named for our distinguished faculty.  Overall the quality of the work presented is as high as that presented at national meetings and the topics covered are no less diverse.  The touchstone of the day is a presentation by a distinguished translational researcher.  We hope that you will join us.
